THE DYNASTY RETURNS
Karnataka are the third-most successful team in Ranji Trophy history with 8 titles, behind only Mumbai (42) and Delhi (7). But it had been 11 years since their last championship in 2014-15, and the wait was starting to weigh on a state that considers domestic cricket dominance a birthright.
The 2025-26 season changed everything. Under coach Yere Goud and captain Mayank Agarwal, Karnataka assembled a batting lineup of almost absurd depth: KL Rahul (when available), Devdutt Padikkal, Karun Nair, Manish Pandey, and Mayank himself โ five players with India caps in a domestic team. And then emerged Ravichandran Smaran, a 22-year-old from Mysuru who became the tournament's top scorer with 950 runs.
The semi-final against Uttarakhand was the statement. Karnataka scored 736 in their first innings โ the highest total of the 2025-26 season. Padikkal made 232, Smaran 135, Rahul 141. The match was drawn, but Karnataka advanced on first-innings lead.
The quarter-final chase at Mumbai had shown their steel โ chasing 325, KL Rahul scored 130 and Smaran finished with 83 not out to win by 4 wickets.
But the final at Hubballi told a different story. J&K amassed 584 in their first innings, and Auqib Nabi tore through Karnataka's batting with 5/54 โ dismissing Nair for a duck and Smaran for a first-ball duck in the same over. Only Mayank Agarwal's defiant 160 provided resistance as Karnataka were bowled out for 293. J&K won on first-innings lead to claim their maiden Ranji title, ending Karnataka's dream of a 9th championship.
"The 736 Innings"
Semi-final. KL Rahul sets the tone with 141. Then Devdutt Padikkal reaches 200 with a cover drive that Uttarakhand's bowlers can only applaud. Then 232. Smaran adds 135. The total climbs past 600, past 700. When Karnataka are finally all out at 736 โ the highest total of the season โ the match is already over. Uttarakhand manage 233 and 260/6, but there is no contest. Karnataka advance to the final by scoring more runs in one innings than some teams manage in an entire match.
Tactical Profile
Five India-capped batsmen plus Smaran (950 runs). Nair (699), Padikkal (232 in SF), Rahul, Mayank, Pandey. They bat teams out of the game.
Prasidh Krishna leads the attack with international experience. Vidwath Kaverappa provides swing. They don't need to destroy โ just contain while the batsmen do the damage.
Played the Final in their own state (Hubballi). KSCA Rajnagar Stadium packed for all five days โ but J&K's first-innings 584 proved too much to overcome.
Key Players
699 runs this season at 63.54 including 233 vs Kerala. The man who scored 303* in Tests channeled years of frustration into a dominant Ranji campaign.
232 in the semi-final โ the innings that defined Karnataka's campaign. Elegant left-hander with an IPL pedigree who saves his best for Ranji cricket. POTM in the SF.
21 Tests for India, Karnataka's captain and the man who sets the tone. Leads from the front with aggressive opening batting and tactical field placements.
India's first-choice keeper-batter, available for select Ranji matches. When he plays, Karnataka's already loaded batting becomes virtually unbowlable.
The experience anchor in Karnataka's middle order. First Indian to score an IPL century. Reliable in pressure moments and a brilliant fielder.
India international leading Karnataka's pace attack. 140+ kmph, hits the deck hard, gets bounce that batsmen struggle to handle. The spearhead.
The swing bowler who complements Prasidh perfectly. From the coffee-growing district of Kodagu โ not a traditional cricket hotbed. Took 5/51 vs Goa this season.
Tournament top scorer with 950 runs at 86.36 โ including twin double-centuries (227* vs Chandigarh, 220* vs Kerala) and twin centuries in the SF (135 + 127). A 22-year-old who announced himself as Karnataka's future.

โPeople starved of watching established cricketers see it as their gateway to stargazing. Many cannot afford to travel to Bengaluru for IPL or international matches.โ
โAfter careful evaluation and detailed consultations, the Association has taken a strategic decision to stage the final at Hubballi.โ
โAuqib Nabi tore through Karnataka with 5/54 as J&K won their maiden Ranji Trophy title. Only Agarwal's 160 stood between them and a total collapse in the final at Hubballi.โ
Behind the Match
Every match needs more than just players. These are the people who make it happen.
Hubballi hosting its first-ever Ranji Final. KSCA chose a venue outside Bengaluru to bring top-flight cricket to North Karnataka.
Head coach Yere Goud and a support staff that managed five India-capped batsmen in one domestic lineup โ a squad management challenge few domestic teams face.
KSCA runs cricket across 30+ districts. The initiative to host matches in Tier-2 cities like Hubballi strengthens the sporting ecosystem beyond Bengaluru.
Modern analytics setup that helped Karnataka prepare for each opponent โ a reason their 3W 3D 1L group stage run and knockout dominance looked so clinical.
Karnataka produces more India cricketers per capita than almost any state. From Dravid and Kumble to Rahul and Prasidh โ the system keeps delivering.
Playing the Final in their own state. Karnataka fans from Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Hubballi expected to pack the ground for all five days.
